Miksi D-vitamiini on meille niin tärkeää

Why Vitamin D is So Important for Us

We have listed six reasons why vitamin D is so important for our body and health:

1. Vitamin D helps the immune system to function normally.

2. Vitamin D helps maintain bone strength.

3. Vitamin D contributes to maintaining normal muscle function.

4. Vitamin D contributes to maintaining healthy teeth.

5. Vitamin D helps maintain normal blood calcium levels.

6. Vitamin D plays a role in the process of cell division.

Many people in the Nordic countries suffer from vitamin D deficiency. The recommended daily intake of vitamin D is 10–20 micrograms. Finnish men get about 11 micrograms from food, and women slightly less, about 8.5 micrograms of vitamin D per day (Finravinto 2012 study).

According to many studies, the optimal daily dose of vitamin D would be 50 micrograms. According to the European Medicines Agency, teenagers and adults can safely take up to 100 micrograms of vitamin D per day, but the daily dose should not be exceeded. If you spend half an hour in the sun with bare arms and legs, your body can produce several hundred micrograms of vitamin D on its own.

In winter, when there is little sunlight, however, it is necessary to rely on vitamin D obtained through food or supplements.
